Thoughts I've thunk while sippin' at a cup of tea and reading something provoking, often get dropped here for the benefit of humanity and my own hubris.

The myth of Jebediah Springfield has merit too. -- Lisa Simpson I was just watching the Simpsons and the episode of "Town Crier" and I realized that myths surrounding historical people, like George Washington, Tommie Jefferson, Joseph Smith and even Jesus, may be more important than the historical reality. The farther back in time you go, the more the myth surrounding the individual becomes larger. Pretty soon, it becomes larger than life, and the myth becomes part of the daily fabric of society. Of course, sometimes the truth seems to help this even better. I mean, I understand that a TV special about Tommie Jefferson and his love affairs with his slaves is being aired. Does this dimish Jefferson's stature, or does it raise the self-respect of the African-American people? Thought originally posted on Thursday, 3 February 2000
