| Finger Pointing to the Moon | ||||||||||||
Thoughts I've thunk while sippin' at a cup of tea and reading something provoking, often get dropped here for the benefit of humanity and my own hubris.

In an article by Thich Nhat Hanh (Summer 2002 issue of Shambhala Sun), he recites a teaching of the Buddha: My teachings are a finger pointing to the moon. Do not get caught in thinking that the finger is the moon. It is becuase of the finger that you can see the moon. To paraphrase this article, it seems to me that Buddhism is good at pointing out the delusions in our life, but can not explain the truth … but this is because the truth can not be explained. It is ineffable. It must be discovered by each of us individually. And the tools of any religion are really just tools to get us to the discovery. Too often we get caught up in the tools. I know computer geeks who spend more time working on their computer, but little time accomplishing anything with that computer. Same with some people and their cars. I also know a lot of people who spend so much time in "church activity" that they miss out on the "spirituality" it is supposed to provide. Thought originally posted on Friday, 9 August 2002
