Now that I've made the switch, I wanted to start listing of Macintosh related web sites that appeal to me. Specifically ones on OSX (pronounced oh-ess-ten I understand
). Here is a list of general web sites that are useful:
- Getting OSX Going … a nice collection of hints and tips.
- Mac Links … a nice collection of links related to Mac.
- Woz's Links … a collection of links from woz.org … That's right, from Da Man himself.
- Mac OSX Hints … Where they list (not surprisingly) hints about how better to use OS X. They list unix hints, too.
- O'Reilly Mac Articles … With OSX, O'Reilly (publishers of Unix and other geeky books) have started a forum for Mac information and articles.
- Mac News Network … Generic news and what not.
- MacOSX Forums … an open forum for OSX support.
- VersionTracker … They keep track of a lot of Mac programs, (over 10,000, from what I understand), listing the latest versions of much of the software that's out there.
- Aquafiles … Similar to VersionTracker, but organized in a Yahoo grouping.
- Fink … A project with the goal of bringing all of the Linux applications ported to the Mac.
Here is a list of specific articles that I've found useful:
Useful Programs:
- Mozilla … Duh. If you don't add any other programs to your Mac, this is it. You probably may want the smaller/faster/limited version, Chimera. A native OSX app without Mail.
- TinkerTool … a program to configure even more options with the OS. My favorite is that it can "place both scroll arrow buttons of any scroll bar at both ends of the bar."
- Better Console … a program that can display and monitor multiple log files.
- Instant Links … interesting … just read the web site on this one.
- iPulse … a very nice docking program that displays in a graphical icon what is going on with your system... er, a load-level program for the Mac.
- uControl … system preference hack to allow you to map any key to anything else. Allows you to emulate a scroll-wheel mouse without the default single-button mouse.
More links will be forthcoming …

Funny how over time, some programs you thought were great ended up getting deleted, while others you continue to use for years…
Out of my list, made almost over a year and a half ago, I’m not using many of them.
Mozilla? Well, I do use its smaller brother, Firefox, but I’ve been using Safari quite a bit nowadays.
Tinkertool? Not very useful with Panther.
Better Console? It needs to display the files from my servers where it counts.
iPulse? Still using this one and have even upgraded it.
uControl? I’ve actually been using Keyboard Maestro, but I really only use it to control iTunes. What I used to use it for has now been taken by QuickSilver.
I really should make a list of programs that I’m still using.
