Random musings from my awakening dementia...

Thoughts I've thunk while sippin' at a cup of tea and reading something provoking, often get dropped here for the benefit of humanity and my own hubris.

Read an interesting article in Shambhala Sun called, The Lama in the Lab by Daniel Goleman, about a more empirical approach to the benefits of meditation (which was interesting in itself), I came across a fabulous quote by the Dalai Lama:

I'm not thinking how to further Buddhism, but how the Buddhist tradition can make some contribution to the benefit of society.

This attitude (which Buddhists inherited from their Hindu roots) is amazing considering the view of other "groups." Granted, these emissaries have the best intentions of helping and saving the lost. But …

I ran across another quote in the same magazine by Charlotte Joko Beck (a Zen Buddhist teacher and author being interviewed by Donna Rockwell) who was asked a question of what she would like to share with all people:

Beck: I don't want to share anything with all people.

Rockwell: Who do you want to share with?

Beck: Nobody. I just live my life. I don't go around wanting to share something. That's extra.

Rockwell: Could you talk about that a little bit?

Beck: Well, there's a little shade of piety that creeps into practice. You know, "I have this wonderful practice, I want to share it with everyone." There's an error in that. You could probably figure it out yourself …
You and I know there's nothing that's going to make me run away faster than somebody who comes around and wants to be helpful. You know what I mean? I don't want people to be helpful to me, I just want to live my life.

Rockwell: Do you think you share yourself?

Beck: Yeah, but who's that?
