I’m a Music Snob ... Kinda

Thoughts I've thunk while sippin' at a cup of tea and reading something provoking, often get dropped here for the benefit of humanity and my own hubris.

When I was a child, i was a music snob … well, not as an child per se, for my childhood was spent lip sync'ing to Abba with my sisters. That's right, one can't be too proud of the music of their childhood.

Anyway, in my younger years, I became a music snob. At least I wanted to be.

I liked the mathematical precision of Bach as well as the profound absurdity of Charles Ives. I also enjoyed the emotional energy of Nicolò Paganini (wish I was old enough to have caught him in concert). But it was a concert of Kronos Quartet that really got me rocketing into the world of music that I classify as hard-to-listen-to.

But my best friend in high school got me started on Jazz. Granted, this began with Weather Report, but soon I was mesmerized by a John Coltrane solo. Years of high school jazz band got me interested in improvisation and as I mentioned years ago, I love jam bands like Phish and moe.

My point to all this background is that something has changed. I'm afraid that I might be growing up …

The other night, my friend and I went to see King Crimson playing downtown. Now, if you're too young to know this group, they could be labeled as the cerebral prog-rock band from the 70's. What was funny about the concert is that it was sponsored by the local "classic rock" station, and it was entertaining to watch the clientele attempt to "bang" their head back and forth to the beat … it was funny because most of the songs were in non-4/4 time signatures. Hats off to Pat Mastelotto for keeping such a group together.

So my friend and I enjoyed the show and it was fun trying to guess what time signature the next song would be in. But as I said, I'm getting old and I'm kinda embarrassed to say this … but I kept wishing for a melody.

Now, I don't want Fripp and his band to change just to appeal to me (if you know anything about Robert Fripp, you'll know that just won't happen), but I'm more intrigued with my own change of perspective. What has happened to me?

Stravinsky wrote one of my favorite symphonies, The Rite of Spring in his 20's … but as he grew older, he started to make more and more subtle music that was more and more melodic. And perhaps this is happening to me …

So, let's just start up iTunes here and see what my most played musical artist is … seems to be a tie between Cowboy Junkies and Bill Evans. Man, I'm just weird. My daughter will have lots of fodder when she's a teenager about Dad and his weird music.
