| What's Up with Blogs? | ||||||||||||
I've been a computer geek since a boy, and thoughts related to computers and software engineering get dropped here for the benefit of humanity and my own hubris.

Today we had a little bar-be-que in honor of my daughter's second birthday, and I got to talking with some friends, and I said that "blogs have become quite faddish..." I know that with the exception of the political climate, the next favorite blog topic is … well blogs, and most bloggers would not appreciate my description of this sensation as a fad. I remember the first time listening to rap many years ago. I wasn't fond of it, but noticed the current popularity of it, and I thought that it would be "just a fad." Popular for a while but fading out to be more of a novelty. It's clear that my prognostication was quite in error. Like it or not, rap is now part of our collective American pop culture, and while it still hasn't made it into the higher echelons of our society (like jazz has), it is probably just a matter of time. Are blogs just a geeky pet rock? I hope not. I feel it is very important for each and every person to be able to express themselves to as large an audience as they wish … and blogs are just one good medium for that. Not that I really wish to actually read those blogs … I just want them available. What I'm doing here on my website never started out to be a "blog" (as back in '97, we had no such term). I was just fulfilling the dream of Berners-Lee in personally publishing to the world. It was just a sound board for my thoughts. Granted, last year I re-organized my thoughts into a "blog format" and even started using the "blog engine," but the one thing that separates me from the rest … I don't write in it every day. I just don't have that much to say, and I typically don't like to just ramble … contrary to what you are reading now. I want my thoughts to have a point. But I have a friend who annoys me every time I see her that she is tired with my latest post. "But it has only been a week … or two." Granted, rambling just to appease my small audience is not my goal. Hmm... then how can I explain this post? Thought originally posted on Monday, 26 May 2003
