Thoughts I've thunk while sippin' at a cup of tea and reading something provoking, often get dropped here for the benefit of humanity and my own hubris.

I got the idea while at the beach this weekend and we passed a guy vigorously making a large design in the sand. My wife asked him what he was making, and he said, “A labyrinth!” She turned to me and said, “What’s that?” I said, “A big maze.” She then said, “Why didn’t he just say that in the first place?” I agreed and said, “Yeah, you should never use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.” This does bring up the thought … do we really want our language watered down into anything less than its current pasty state? I mean, the vocabulary and complex grammar used by our forefathers when they were inventing this silly language we call English, was much more interesting to listen and to speak than our current TV-monologue-and-acronym-rich language. Eh … whatever. Thought originally posted on Monday, 15 September 2003
