| Needing More than Chicken Soup for Your Soul | ||||||||||||
Thoughts I've thunk while sippin' at a cup of tea and reading something provoking, often get dropped here for the benefit of humanity and my own hubris.

Went out to dinner with a friend who wanted to “talk philosophy” by telling me, “I don’t have a core belief system now, what would you recommend?” Of course this is the golden question that allows us to fill their hole with our own filling. Getting others to believe our system (or somewhat close) is very validating against our own uncertainty fears. I suppose if someone asked for my suggestion for dinner, I might answer with my own favorites, but if someone asked about their diet, then that would require a different, more thought-out, response. While avoidance of dairy and vegetarianism is great for me (I am carb-man!), that is not the best diet for everyone on the planet. You’ve got to discover what works best for yourself. Each person is unique, and therefore, your “path” will also be unique. Sure there will be others with ideas to chew on, but the solution will be uniquely yours. You need more than just chicken soup for your soul. There is no easy answer, no quick fix here. In fact, there might not be a definitive answer. You know the old adage, “The journey is more important than the destination.” So get walking and start seeing your country. I think the first step is to decide what you need to walk. For me, the books on my shelf are my hiking boots and having one-on-one conversations over tea with a dear friend is my walking stick. But to others, a congregation or a class is what is helpful. But like I said before, you must stay open to the subtle messages of the soul, for God(Insert your own term here) will have a unique path for you. Perhaps I’ve read too much Jung, but life is full of synchronizing patterns— you just have to pay attention and take notice. Thought originally posted on Tuesday, 2 December 2003
