Random musings from my awakening dementia...

Thoughts I've thunk while sippin' at a cup of tea and reading something provoking, often get dropped here for the benefit of humanity and my own hubris.

Granted, lately I’ve had this “death obsession” … had to get my will and trust set up, increase my life insurance, etc. but this mid-life-death-thing insisted that I get a physical. I was feeling pretty good while I sat there filling out the form … eat well, no family diseases, etc. Felt pretty good even after the pokin’ and proddin’ and jabbin’.

But I got a phone call a couple of days later from the nurse about my lab results. Everything looked pretty good. “So, what’s the cholesterol level?” I ask…

“240. That’s a bit high, Mr. Abrams. The doctor recommends that you lower your red-meat intake,” the nurse says.

“Hmm… Well, I’ve been a vegetarian for almost ten years.”

“Oh. Well, then you’ll need to cut down on your dairy.”

“Haven’t had any dairy in almost five years,” I replied.

“Oh. I guess you’ll need to increase your exercise and come back in four months for a redo.”

Lovely. I was really thinking that with my extreme diet (according to my Italian in-laws) that they would be asking me to start eating a cow every now and then. You know, for health.

Point blank … this sucks.

And it really isn’t fair. But hey, that’s life. You make the best with the body and brain and soul you’re dealt with. Everybody’s unique and everybody’s weird. Just the way it goes.

Yeah, and all that jazz. It still sucks that I’m going to be killed if I even smell a pizza or “freedom” fries. Funny that we can see someone else missing a limb or head and feel pretty bad for him, but when it is us that has a paper cut, the world stops.

Still doesn’t make me feel any better. Oh well. I’ll let you know how the make-up results come out in four months.

A comment to this from Phil

There is no rhyme, reason, or justice to Cholesterol levels. Shar (my wife) eats very healthy (very little red meat, low salt, low dairy, low carbs, low sugar, etc., etc.), and has high BP and marginal cholesterol. Meanwhile, other than the benefit I get from the diet I eat at home, I eat much less healthy food but have normal BP, low cholesterol, etc., etc. My parents exhibited similar ironic traits w/r/t their diets and health indicators. Life’s a bitch, and then you diet.
