First 10 Random Songs

Thoughts I've thunk while sippin' at a cup of tea and reading something provoking, often get dropped here for the benefit of humanity and my own hubris.

Given my previous fascination with musical playlists, and this suggestion from Nicole, I decided to put my entire musical library on random and start playing. I generally don’t do this because it is soooo disconcerting. Jumping between a Bach fugue to a Grateful Dead space out to “The Wheels on the Bus” is enough to give any one a headache.

But I’m almost embarrassed to list what it might play …

  • Life Is A Circle from the album “Songs Without Words” by Michal Whalen (Windham Hill Collection)
  • Who Killed Davey Moore? by Bob Dylan from the album “The Bootleg Series: Rare And Unreleased” (Bob Dylan)
  • Walk Like A Pygmy by Mo Boma from the album “Trance Planet”
  • Countermoon by Donald Fagen from the album “Kamakiriad”
  • Who Loves You Better by Lyle Lovett from the album “The Road To Ensenada”
  • Foam by Phish from the album “Hampton Comes Alive” (a bootleg of a 1998 concert)
  • Reflections by Thelonious Monk from the album “The Composer”
  • I Have the Touch by Peter Gabriel from the album “Plays Live”
  • Southern Man by Neil Young
  • Harold the Barrel by Genesis from the album “Nursery Cryme”

Actually, that wasn’t too embarrassing… I was afraid a “Barney” song (for my two year old) would pop up. I was also surprised by the lack of classical music that showed up … well, I was surprised until I remember that I haven’t ripped much of my classical music collection (‘cause I’ve been trying to figure out how to categorize it … but now that iTunes has a grouping tag, I think that has been solved).

Blues: 12.3%
Classical: 7.5%
Folk: 7.1%
Jazz: 24%
Rock: 32.4%
Newage: 4.8%
World: 6.6%
Other: 4.6%

Actually, I haven’t ripped all of my CDs … I did at one time, but then that hard drive crashed, and I haven’t gotten around to redoing my work. I’ve only put in 450 of my CDs … that’s only 16.7 days worth of music. Sheesh, how repetitive.

Hmm…. I’m also curious as to the proportions between my different musical genres. I’m actually curious enough to find out. I should do a pie chart or something:

Hmm… didn’t realize I had that many “Rock” albums … but I suppose just about everything gets categorized that way. I’m curious how this compares with others … any takers?
