| Happy Belated Leap Day | ||||||||||||
Thoughts I've thunk while sippin' at a cup of tea and reading something provoking, often get dropped here for the benefit of humanity and my own hubris.

I was really planning on doing something fun for “Leap Day” … but kinda forgot until I sat down to work this evening and realized the date. Dagburnit. I missed it. What is it about special days that make you want to do something special? I agree with Matthew Baldwin in that “Leap Day” should be a holiday… or at least a celebratory pizza party. I feel like I have just wasted this day. You know … wasted. My day really started the night before … my two year old daughter, after being scared silly by seeing Nemo’s shark on TV, kept waking up throughout the night. So I spent most of the night in her bed with my arms around her. She’s too young to be afraid. We were woken up by the coos of my baby boy in the next room, so we snuck in to get some early-morning baby play-time. After making some breakfast, my daughter and I watched our new favorite show on PBS: Jackers. While my wife went for a walk with the kids, I finished planting my bulbs and some other plants in the front garden, did a little weeding, rearranged some stones, anchored a trellis that has been falling over all winter, and … you know, putzing around the yard. When they all came back from the walk, we piled in the car and had lunch at our favorite Thai restaurant. It was funny listening to my daughter in the back seat go over everything she wanted to order, “Me have hicken un a dick (stick), wice (rice), un noodles (Pad Kee Mao without any of the good-for-you stuff).” As for me, I thought I had tried everything on the menu, but today I noticed something new, and it turned out to be really good. After lunch we stopped by a store and got my daughter a pretty pink dress for Spring and a little Dora doll. Believe it or not, she doesn’t ask for a lot when we are at the store, but today she said she wanted to buy it … what the hell, sure we’ll get it. She ended up sleeping with it. This evening, we were still recovering from our large lunch, so we just made a salad and laughed at the “Dweebs on Parade” (I mean, the Oscar’s). Actually, we didn’t watch that much of it, since neither I or my daughter wanted to … so we eventually outvoted mommy on this one. After getting my baby boy to sleep (by dancing to Abba’s Dancing Queen, I put him to bed (as my wife was already in bed), and went out to check on my daughter. She was asleep while watching Dora … and holding her Dora doll. I carried her into bed and just now, headed into the den… And now I realized that I have just wasted my leap day. Maybe I should waste more days this one. Thought originally posted on Monday, 1 March 2004
